Lasithi's North coast has everything; from organized beaches with sun beds and water sports to secluded private bath tubs. Either right inside town or at more remote places, most of these beaches have been awarded the European Blue Flag.

Agios Nikolaos Beach

Agios Nikolaos Beach
A pebbly beach very close to the city center, it is very popular since it is fully organized and well protected from the winds. As it shares the space with the Mini Golf Court, there is an admission fee.
Facilities: sun beds, umbrellas, showers, adult and children's swimming pools, sport facilities, snack bar with cool refreshments and light meals, a lot of grass and trees for shade
Accessible: from the center of Agios Nikolaos all means of transportation, even on foot (10 min. walk).

Agios Nikolaos Almyros Beach

Agios Nikolaos Almyros Beach
The long sandy beach of Almyros is considered the best beach of the city; At about 1 kilometer from the city center to the South, it lies within a cove, well protected from the winds. The location, the shallow sea, the sand and the facilities, make it ideal for families with small children.

Agios Nikolaos Havania Beach

The well-organized sandy beach of Havania is close to the city center of Agios Nikolaos and well protected from the winds.

Amoudara

Amoudara
This beautiful sandy beach (in Greek "large sandy beach") is located some 5 kilometers south of Agios Nikolaos, on the main road leading to Sitia and Ierapetra. The beach is well organized and protected from the winds , making it one of the most popular beaches in the area. It offers a wide range of accommodation facilities in hotels, studios and rooms to let and several restaurants, taverns, bars and cafes.

Boufos

Boufos
This small sandy beach is some 26 kilometers northwest of Agios Nikolaos, past the beach of Sissi. The beach is very much affected by the winds, which, on a windy day, create characteristic huge waves. Swimmers should be cautious in such cases. Well organized, it offers facilities for accommodation and food since the beach of Sissi is very close.

Dreros

Dreros
This sandy beach with pebbles in some parts, is some 13 kilometers north of Agios Nikolaos and 2-3 kilometers north of Elounda. It is not affected by the winds and the tamarisk trees offer a good shade. It's name derives from the ancient city of Dreros, located some 3 kilometers from Neapolis. Its most important finding is a stone inscription citing the oath of 180 adolescents of the city; The beach is well organized and, as Elounda is nearby, it offers all kinds of accommodation, food and amusement facilities. It is considered as one of the best beaches in the Elounda area and can therefore get rather crowded.

The sandy beach north of the small port of Elounda is some 11 kilometers north of Agios Nikolaos. Protected by the Spinalonga peninsula, the beach is not affected by the winds. Fully organized, the beach offers a wide range of accommodation, from luxurious hotels to rooms to let. A lot of taverns, restaurants, bars and cafes offer food, drink and amusement.

Elounda, Rocky nudist beach

Elounda, Rocky nudist beach
This small rocky beach is some 10 minutes drive south of Elounda and 10 kilometers north of Agios Nikolaos. It is protected from the winds and allows nudism. The beach is not organized at all but close enough to the big hotels and other facilities of Elounda.

Accessible: from Agios Nikolaos by frequent public buses, rental or private car and motorbikes. At the narrow part of land joining Elounda with the rest of the island, just at the windmills, follow the dirt track and drive for 10 minutes. From the end of the road you will have to walk for a while.

Milatos

Milatos beach (west of the small port)
This small sandy beach is some 33 kilometers from Agios Nikolaos, 2 kilometers northwest of the village of Milatos and a bit to the west of the small port of Milatos (the main beach of the settlement). It is right in front of the hotel "Minos Imperial" and is considered to be the best beach in the area.

Plaka, northern beach

The beach north of the settlement of Plaka is some 16 kilometers north of Agios Nikolaos and 5 kilometers north of Elounda. A pebbly beach, protected from the winds, with several tamarisk trees offering their natural shade and an amazing view of the Spinalonga peninsula. Well organized and within the broader area of Elounda, the beach has access to all kinds of accommodation, food and amusement facilities. It is considered as one of the best beaches in the Elounda area and can therefore get rather crowded.

Plaka, southern beach

Plaka, southern beach
The beach south of the settlement of Plaka is some 16 kilometers south of Agios Nikolaos and 5 kilometers north of Elounda. A pebbly beach, protected from the winds . Unlike the northern beach of Plaka, it is not organized at all. The only thing you will find here is calmness, no big crowds. However, as it is within the broader area of Elounda, the beach has access to all kinds of accommodation, food and amusement facilities.

Sissi

Sissi Beach
This small sandy beach is some 26 kilometers northwest of Agios Nikolaos and some 41 kilometers east of Heraklion. Affected by the winds, the beach is very well organized and offers accommodation facilities in hotels of all categories, rooms to let and camping. Also various alternatives for food and drink in the taverns, restaurants and cafes of the area. It also offers the chance for some sightseeing nearby. You can drive to the traditional village of Epano Sissi, just 1,5 kilometer east of the beach, the Monastery of Agios Georgios of Selinari (5 kilometers south of Sissi) as well as the small mountain village of Vrachassi, at some 7 kilometers south of Sissi. The archaeological site of Malia is also very close (some 5 kilometers to the West); and, if you like caves, don’t miss a visit to the cave of Milatos, which is also an archaeological site and just 5 kilometers east of the beach.

Sitia Beach

Sitia Beach
The long sandy beach of Sitia is some 65 kilometers east of Agios Nikolaos, just at the eastern exit of the town, on the way to Vai. The beach is open to the North and affected by the winds. It is one of the clearest beaches, not only of Crete and Greece, but possibly also of the whole Mediterranean Sea. Due to the vicinity of the beach to the town there are many alternatives for accommodation in hotels of all categories and rooms to let as well as for food and amusement. There are plenty of choices all day (and night!) round. There are some facilities but the beach is not stuffed with sun beds and umbrellas. You may also go eastwards to Petras or westwards to Agioi Pantes.

Tholos

Tholos
The pebbly beach of Tholos (or Kavoussi) is some 26 kilometers east of Agios Nikolaos and 3,5 kilometers north of the village of Kavoussi, which is on the main road connecting Agios Nikolaos with Sitia and Ierapetra. The beach is open to the North and affected by the winds; a series of tamarisk trees offer their shade. The left end of the beach is better protected from the winds and the ground is sandy there. Nearest accommodation facilities can be found in the nearby resort of Pachia Ammos (some 8,5 kilometers to the South); a few rooms to let are also available in the village of Kavoussi. The area also offers some sightseeing. Kavoussi is built at the foot of mountain Thrypti within a small fertile valley with vegetable cultivation, vineyards and olive trees. You may also visit the Byzantine churches of Agios Georgios and of the 12 Apostles. It is also worth seeing the huge perennial olive tree, with a trunk of an impressive diameter within the valley at some 2 kilometers southeast of the village; it is certainly a natural monument. For fans of archeology, there are the Minoan settlements at "Vrontas" and "Kastro" and the Minoan copper mines at "Chryssokamino". At the beach of Tholos there are ruins of the Roman period, whereas on the small islet of Psira opposite the beach, there is an Early Minoan settlement. Close to "Chryssokamino" and certainly worth seeing are the gorge of Messona and the cave Theriospilio with interesting stalagmites.

Vai

Vai
This exotic sandy beach with its unique palm tree forest in Europe is some 94 kilometers northeast of Agios Nikolaos and 24 kilometers east of Sitia. Within a space of 60 acres there are some 5.000 perennial trees, a real oasis in the desert-like landscape of Eastern Crete. The beach is somewhat affected by the winds, but who cares about winds in such a breathtaking environment! It's truly a landscape of unique beauty! With it's palm tree forest it looks rather like an African beach placed on European territory. The beach is well organized and an example for good combination of facilities with respect to the natural environment. Some 2 kilometers northwards is the archaeological site of Itanos with the ruins of the ancient city sunk in the sea. If you are lucky enough to have a yacht or a small boat, you may also visit the islet of Elassa, at some 3,5 nautical miles east to Vai.
