Top Beaches along the south coast of Rethymnon

The beaches along the south coast of Rethymnon are less crowded. You will notice campers on some of them but officially camping is not allowed outside of the approved camp grounds.

Agia Galini Beach

Agia Galini is some 55 km southeast of Rethymnon, just beside the homonymous village, before the river. Well protected from the south winds and very well organized, it is a very popular beach and gets fairly crowded in summer, especially in the months of July and August.

Accessible:
from Rethymnon by regular public buses; there are boat connection to several beaches and villages of Southern Crete.

Agia Galini Past the River

Agia Galini Past the River - Located at some 58 km southeast of Rethymnon and 2 km east of Agia Galini, the beach past the river is long with big pebbles and a rocky seabed, which makes it ideal for snorkeling. Not very organized and affected by south winds, this beach offers a quiet swim away from the crowds and allows nudism. Nearest accomodation can be found in Agia Galini.

Agios Georgios Beach

Agios Georgios is some 62 km southeast of Rethymnon and 7 km west of Agia Galini. It is a wonderful beach with pebbles, not very organized and affected by south winds. Due to the rocky sea bed, it is ideal for snorkeling. Nearest accommodation can be found in Agia Galini.

from Rethymnon by regular public buses to Agia Galini and from there either by car, motorbike or by boat.

Agios Pavlos Beach

Agios Pavlos is some 58 km southeast of Rethymnon, and 13 km from the main road to Agia Galini (19 km from the village of Akoumia). A remote, long sandy beach affected by the south winds. The beach is well enough organized and ideal for snorkeling. Really beautiful and worth spending a few days there.

from Rethymnon by car and motorbike only. On the road to Agia Galini, turn right after the village of Nea Krya Vryssi (approx. 45 km from Rethymnon) and continue for another 14 km.

West of Agios Pavlos

Agios Pavlos West is some 58 km southeast of Rethymnon, and 13 km from the main road to Agia Galini (19 km from the village of Akoumia) and west of Agios Pavlos. A beautiful and long sandy beach affected by the south winds. The beach is rather isolated, with few people and allows nudism. Nearest accommodation can be found in Agios Pavlos. Since there are no cafes or taverns, make sure to take along some water.

from Rethymnon by car and motorbike only. On the road to Agia Galini, turn right after the village of Nea Krya Vryssi (approx. 45 km from Rethymnon) and continue for another 14 km to Agios Pavlos. From there it’s a short walk on the dunes.

Akoumia Beach

Akoumia is some 51 km south of Rethymnon and 12 km south of the homonymous village. A long beach with fine pebbles, affected by south winds, and good for snorkeling, it is popular with locals and tourists who are looking for a more natural environment. It is not organized.

Ammoudi Mikro

Ammoudaki is successive to the beach of Damnoni, 38 km south of Rethymnon, 7 km east of Plakias and 4 km from Lefkogia. A small beach with fine pebbles, well protected from winds and fairly organized. The beach is so small and popular, especially with nudists, that it is usually extremely crowded. Accommodation facilities and tavernas are available at Ammoudi and Damnoni.

Ammoudi Beach

Ammoudi is a wonderful sandy beach 38 km south of Rethymnon, 6 km east of Plakias and a 15 minutes walk from the beach of Damnoni. It is well protected from the south winds and very popular with nudists. The beach is well organized.

Ammoudi Mikro

Ammoudi Mikro is successive to the beach of Ammoudi, 38 km south of Rethymnon, 7 km east of Plakias, 4 km from Lefkogia and a 10 minutes walk from the beach of Damnoni. A small sandy beach well protected from the winds and not organized at all.

Damnoni Beach

Damnoni is some 38 km south of Rethymnon and 6 km east of Plakias; a beautiful sandy beach affected by the south winds. The beach is well organized.

Drimiskos Beach

Drimiskos is some 40 km south of Rethymnon and east of the lagoon of Preveli; a sandy beach affected by south winds and not very crowded. The rocky ends of the beach are good for snorkeling. The eastern end allows nudism. The beach is not organized.

Accessible:
from Rethymnon by car or motorbike. From the road to Preveli you will have to take the dirt road at the old stone bridge. The beach offers access to the beach of Preveli via a path.

Korakas Beach

Korakas is some 47 km southwest of Rethymnon and 2 km south of the village of Rodakino. Korakas is a sandy beach affected by the south winds, not very organized.

Ligres Beach

Ligres is some 52 km south of Rethymnon and 7 km south of the village of Kerames; a beautiful, pebbly beach affected by the south winds and not organized. Its eastern end allows nudism.

Plakias Beach

Plakias is some 39 km south of Rethymnon within the Plakias Bay in front of the popular tourist resort; a long sandy beach with crystal clear waters affected by the south winds. Since it’s a well organized beach, it can get crowded in summer. The eastern part allows nudism.

Souda Beach

Plakias Souda is a beach 3 km west of Plakias within the Plakias bay, 43 km southwest of Rethymnon; a lovely sandy beach, less crowded than the main beach of Plakias. The beach is well organized and affected by south winds. The rocky ends of the beach are ideal for snorkeling.

and from there by car or motorbike or on foot (30-40 minutes walk)

Preveli Beach

Preveli is some 40 km south of Rethymnon. This unique sandy beach with the riverKourtaliotis and the palm tree forest has an exotic atmosphere. Since the river has enough water even in summer, visitors have a chance to swim in both sweet and salt water. Due to this scenic and unusual landscape, the beach is a very popular destination. Fortunately, this small paradise has no accommodation facilities and the way to reach it is not easy.

Accessible:
by two ways. The easy way is to take the excursion boat that leaves from Plakias at 10:00 in the morning and returns at 16:00 in the afternoon. This is a very comfortable way to reach the beach; however, you will miss out on the extraordinary view from above. The hard way is to drive 1,5 km past the Preveli Monastery, leave your car or bike at the parking area and from there descend the stepped path (approx. 30 minutes). Remember to take along some water, your hat and sun screen.

Rodakino Beach

Rodakino is some 47 km southwest of Rethymnon and 3 km from the homonymous village. In fact there are three different pebbly beaches, all affected by south winds. Two of these beaches at the end of a dirt track, offer some facilities for swimming, food and drink. The third beach, which is behind a low hill, has no facilities at all. It is therefore never crowded and popular with nudists. The rocky seabed makes it ideal for snorkeling. Nearest accommodations in a few rooms are available in the village of Rodakino.

Accessible:
the first two beaches can be reached by car and motorbike only; the third beach is also accessible by car, but you will have to ask a local for directions to find it. A better way would be on foot over the small hill.

Shinaria Beach

Shinaria is some 35 km south of Rethymnon and 3 km south of the village of Lefkogia; a sandy beach, protected from the winds and fairly organized.
Facilities: few accommodations, taverna, sun beds, umbrellas
Accessible:
from Rethymnon by regular public buses to Lefkogia and from there on foot. The best way, however, to reach it is by car or motorbike.

Triopetra Beach

Triopetra, named after the three impressive rocks in the sea, is some 52 km south of Rethymnon and 13 km south of the village of Akoumia. A long, sandy beach affected by the south winds, it is very popular, not only because of the marvelous landscape, the crystal clear sea and the facilities, but also for its magic sunsets. Fairly organized.

Accessible:
from Rethymnon by car or motorbike only from the road to Agia Galini with direction the village of Akoumia. From there continue to the end of the dirt track and a few minutes on foot.
